2014 | A year of changes, hard work, and so much love!

Welcome back to the blog everybody!!!

I promise to be better at keeping up with all of you this year 😉

Where do I begin?!?!

Let’s start with some fun facts! This will give you a glimpse at how crazy our life has been lately and how incredibly blessed we are by all the support and love behind us 🙂

Total weddings shot in 2014: 30
Total weddings since we started in 2012: 68
{We will hit 100 by the end of 2015!!!}

Total sessions (engagements, families, maternity, etc.) shot in 2014: 51
Total (engagements, families, maternity, etc.) since we started in 2012: 85

Total miles traveled in 2014: 13,550
Total miles traveled since we started in 2012: 25,249

Total  images taken in 2014: 259,090
Total images taken since we started in 2012: 456,203

Total ice cream cones consumed by Debby after weddings {it’s my celebratory snack on the way home!} in 2014: Far more than I would care to share…let’s just say it is over 30 😉
Total ninja moves achieved by Matthew {because he doesn’t realize he is in the shot till that last second} in 2014: At LEAST 30!!!

Total number of TOMS worn through since we started in 2012: 10 pairs that I can remember and at least another 2 or 3 that the kittens have hidden around the house!
Total amount of snacks Matt goes through on a typical wedding day: I think I stopped counting because it is far too many 😉

2014 was such an extremely stressful, overwhelming, and incredibly rewarding year! Guys, when we started this ‘little’ business back in 2012, I never imagined how popular and huge it would become. We thought if I did 4 or 5 weddings a year, that would be enough to keep me busy and get me out of the house every so often 😉  So many changes started this year that are taking full shape in 2015 and, while it was incredibly difficult to start so many improvements and have to wait to finish, I am so thankful to have a man by my side to help keep me sane and calm through it all. Seriously, Matthew is the quiet voice in this company, but if he wasn’t there calmly speaking words of wisdom and encouragement we wouldn’t be doing this! He puts up with so much and I am so grateful 🙂

I guess the biggest thing that happened in 2014 was the changing of our name! We talked about this for a very long time because we were realizing how much we were growing and how much of a team we had become because of it all! Becoming Deb & Matt Photo wasn’t a hard choice, it just made sense 🙂

Being in business only 3 years, I am still learning that every year is going to be completely different and learning to work through that has been the biggest hurdle this year. I am also learning that I can delegate some things to others and it will be okay 🙂 I think most women struggle with this aspect of life, but I know I do especially! Matthew really got into shooting weddings this year and that has been amazing! We both see things so differently. He sees the wedding through a man’s {and groom’s} eyes catching the pivotal moments and keeping it pretty clearcut where I see the wedding day through a woman’s {bride’s} eyes and go so far into the details you won’t know what to do with all those pictures 😉 Being a team has meant so much more than I imagined! This year he is going to start helping with the editing process {he is REALLY excited} as he loves the technical end of everything and anything. I have to be honest with you, and you can probably tell by the numbers, that I got quite overwhelmed with pictures this year. We were shooting more than we ever have before and that meant more pictures with more editing than ever! So having Matt jump on board with the post processing aspect of this business made sense, but it was so hard. Editing is a catharsis for me. It allows me to take the images of the people I have grown to love and really make them into the works of art I envisioned! I remember when Matt started shooting with me, I had a slight tinge because he was starting to step on my ‘turf’. I learned very quickly that what we do together is soooo much better than what I did solo and our couples will agree! How true this is in both our business and our marriage. So it only makes sense to let him start adding to editing and post processing so that we can better serve everyone and stay on track to give you the best service in every aspect 🙂

This last year was the first full year in our first home! It has been so hard on me as an artist to not spend every waking moment decorating and creating my home right NOW. I am learning that it is okay if it isn’t perfect yet because our family and clients are way more important than how our house looks. Funnily enough, the house doesn’t seem to care 😉 We have a month of down time before we start shooting our 2015 wedding season, so my creative side will finally be happy and color will definitely be on these walls soon!!!

We also added two more cats to our family this past year. Oh goodness, we both forgot how incredibly cute and amazing kittens can be, we also forgot the neediness that tends to go with that 😉 I think a big lesson that I learned in 2014 was that life goes on, it continues whether you are ready or not! We can get so busy that life just passes by and we are working on fixing that in 2015! The kittens did teach me this in so many ways. We also learned that we are THOSE cat people who will talk to our cats like they are humans and do care about what we say 🙂 It isn’t that strange is it?

A HUGE thing that started in 2014! We decided near the end of the year that we would do a wedding photography workshop together in 2015. It has been something that we have been wanting to do since we started the business because, as awesome as schooling is, we learned very quickly that experience is your best friend in this field! A workshop allows for hands on training and a lot of learning from the best in the business. God had other plans, as He usually does, and decided to change the direction a bit in our plan 🙂 Some of the biggest names in the wedding industry that we have followed for several years now, have collaborated in opening The International Academy of Wedding Photographers. We are coming in on the ground floor of this exciting new opportunity for wedding photographers and we are sooooooo excited!!! This is going to allow us to learn together at home and take part in 8 different courses all geared towards wedding photography, from shooting to marketing to branding. We will get the best of both worlds when it comes to workshops and going to school as we get the in-depth knowledge you would receive in school, but we also get the hands on experience with some of the best in the business!
God is so good!!!

We really just want to take a minute and thank all of you! We don’t get to enough, but you all mean so much to us. Your patience while we got through the end of 2014, your understanding in knowing that I only have two hands to keep track of everything in this business, and your excitement every time we share with you, have been nothing short of spectacular 🙂 Everybody give yourself a big hug and know that I will give you one should we ever see each other in person 😉
Thank you thank you THANK YOU!!!

I know this has been so long and if you have stuck through till the end, we appreciate it! We like to have a verse for the year to kind of cling to when things do get stressful throughout the year and this year is no different. So I leave you with our verse of the year and a look back into all our weddings and shoots throughout the year that we will be going through in detail over the next couple months 🙂

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. {Hebrews 12:1-2}
